Divine Messages - 158 : Kaikeyi Knew She Would Be Abused, Hated And Disliked

Kaikeyi Knew She Would Be Abused, Hated And Disliked by Seema Burman appeared in the Speaking Tree on Mar 26, 2012

The queen who got Rama sent away to the forest in exile was merely abiding by a cosmic plan.

Rama accorded Kaikeyi full respect; he gave her his abode and released her from the cycle of births and deaths. Yet Rama’s devotees find it difficult to forgive her for banishing him to the forest. Tulasidas, however,  says it was all a Cosmic Play to destroy the demons. But devotees argue that Rama could have gone to the forest anyway, to destroy the demons. Why drag Sita along? Yet a reading of Ramayana shows that all those who met Rama, Sita and Lakshmana were blessed and they attained life’s goal by seeing, meeting, serving, talking to Rama. Many lives were transformed by the vision of Rama with Sita and Lakshmana. Only one person was forever disgraced and disrespected, and that person was Kaikeyi.

No girl is named Kaikeyi lest she takes on her characteristics. This is the bhakti perspective as Kaikeyi is seen in negative light. A jnani would know that what Kaikeyi contributed to the Cosmic Drama. Hers was the greatest sacrifice as she embraced infamy forever. Rama acknowledges her sacrifice and gives her due respect when they all come to meet him in the forest and when he comes back to Ayodhya later.

Kaikeyi’s maid Manthara’s motives are clear as she wanted to serve the king’s mother. But Kaikeyi’s change of behaviour is strange. Kaikeyi was the daughter of King Ashwapati and the only sister of seven brothers. She was brave, daring, rode chariots, fought wars, was extremely beautiful, played instruments, sang and danced. King Dasaratha saw her on a hunting expedition in Kashmir and fell in love with her. Kaikeyi’s father extracted a promise that her son (his grandson) would ascend the throne. Dasaratha agreed as he had no son from any of his wives. But Kaikeyi did not bear a son and so Dasaratha married Sumitra.

It is only in old age that Dasaratha gets four sons due to a yagna ceremony and Rama is the beloved of all. Kaikeyi loves Rama more than her own son Bharata, so it was inconceivable that she would banish Rama to the forest for 14 years. Sages say all this was going according to a Cosmic Plan. Just as there are several grounds for God’s incarnation as Rama and the creation of Ravana, there are several reasons for Kaikeyi’s actions. Firstly, Dasaratha had promised the throne to Kaikeyi’s son and the promise had to be honoured as was the rule of the Raghu Dynasty- ‘Praan jaaye par vachan na jaaye’- ‘Our words must be honoured even at the cost of our life.’ Second, as a child, Rama told Kaikeyi that since he was the incarnation of Vishnu, he  needed an excuse to destroy demons and save sages. He needed someone to banish Him for 14 years and chose Kaikeyi as she was the boldest of the queens. Thirdly, as a child, Kaikeyi had blackened the face of a sage in meditation and he cursed her that she too would get a similar black reputation.

Ramkatha exponent Morari Bapu, gives us a fourth reason. Kaikeyi’s guru Sage Ratna, an astrologer, predicted that she would marry the king of Ayodhya who would die due of grief for his sons. To save the Raghu Dynasty, Kaikeyi would have to ensure that for 14 years no one sat on the throne for that would lead to misfortune. Sage Ratna was father of Shravan Kumar’s grandparents. Shravan Kumar was later killed accidentally by King Dasaratha’s arrow. Shravan Kumar’s grandfather was Sage Dhoumya whose parents were Ratnavali and Sage Ratna. Sage Ratna was a royal priest of Nandigram ruled by King Ashwapati. Sage Ratna had warned her that life as a queen would be very testing and her husband would die of grief for his son. Guru Vasishtha knew of this and decided that grief for son could be death of a son so rather than one son and king dying it would be better that only the king dies. So grief of separation was introduced and Dasaratha was allowed to die. Vasishtha advised Kaikeyi to ask for her two boons -- for Rama to be exiled for 14 years and throne for Bharata. He knew that Bharata would never sit on the throne as long as Rama was living. It was Vasishtha who advised Bharata to install Rama's wooden slippers on the throne if Rama disagreed to return to Ayodhya. The whole drama was planned and the players merely acted.

Kaikeyi had been given two boons for her fighting skills. When Indra, king of gods, requested Dasaratha to fight demon Samhasura, Kaikeyi accompanied him. In the battle Dasaratha’s chariot wheel got loose and Kaikeyi put her little finger in the spoke. Soon she took the chariot to a safe place, changed the wheel, nursed the wounded king and again went in the battlefield and they won. Dasaratha promised her two boons which she laughed away. She had forgotten about these boons but not Vashishtha and Manthara. They advised her to use these boons, but the intentions were different.
Kaikeyi inherited obstinacy from her mother.  Once when King Ashwapati  and his queen were strolling he heard a pair of birds talking and laughed uncontrollably. Ashwapati, King of Kashmir, had the boon of understanding language of birds, insects and animals. The queen wanted to know what the bird had said but the king replied that according to the boon if he disclosed it  he would die. The queen said she didn’t care whether he lived or died but he must tell her what the birds had said. The king banished her forever to her parental home. Kaikeyi was raised by maid Manthara who wanted Kaikeyi to enjoy the highest status.

Kaikeyi knew she would be abused, hated and disliked for all times to come but she agreed to be a part of God’s lila or play.

Divine Messages - 153 : Quotes from Speaking Tree

Some quotes from Speaking Tree by Swami Vivekananda
  • When we come to non-attachment, then we can understand the marvelous mystery of the universe: how it is intense activity and at the same time intense peace, how it is work every moment and rest every moment
  • We must approach religion with reverence and with love, and our heart will stand up and say, this is truth, and this is untruth
  • This is the first lesson to learn: be determined not to curse anything outside, not to lay the blame upon anyone outside, but stand up, lay the blame on yourself. You will find that is always true. Get hold of yourself
  • There is only one sin. That is weakness.... The only saint is that soul that never weakens, faces everything, and determines to die game
  • HOW to worship Him? through love. He is to be worshiped as the one beloved dear than everything in this and the next life .
  • All who have actually attained any real religious experience never wrangle over the form in which the different religions are expressed. They know that the soul of all religions is the same and so they have no quarrel with anybody just because he or she does not speak in the same tongue
  • All who have actually attained any real religious experience never wrangle over the form in which the different religions are expressed. They know that the soul of all religions is the same and so they have no quarrel with anybody just because he or she does not speak in the same tongue
  • THROUGH prayer, the love of God grows and assumes a form which is called supreme devotion. Forms vanish, rituals fly away, books are superseded, images, temples, churches, religions and sects, countries and nationalities - all these little limitations and bondage's fall off by their own nature from him who knows this love of God.
  • The power of purity—it is a definite power
  • PRAYER is divine love alone. When this highest ideal of love is reached, philosophy is thrown away. Who will then care of it ? Freedom, salvation, nirvana- all are thrown away. Who cares to become free while in the enjoyment of divine love?
  • TO worship God even for the sake of salvation or any other reward is equally degenerate. Love knows no reward. Give your love unto to God, but do not ask anything in return even from Him through pray.

Divine Messages - 152 : Navaratri Invokes The Moving Force

Navaratri Invokes The Moving Force by Bhanumathi Narasimhan appeared in the Speaking Tree on Oct 15, 2012

We float in the effulgence of one scintillating unseen cosmic energy called the ‘Devi,’ Divine Mother, womb of all creation. She is the seed of all dynamism, radiance, beauty, equanimity, peace and nourishment. She is the life force energy.

Devi, as Goddess Durga is epitomised as Shakti who wards off all evil. Durga also means hill. Something difficult is often described as an uphill task. In the presence of Durga Shakti, negative forces fade away.
Durga is referred to as ‘Jaya Durga’ or the one who brings jai or victory. She is Durgatipariharini – one who removes obstacles. She transforms negativity into positivity. Even difficulties find it difficult to come near her.
When you pray to Mother Divine as Durga, you become courageous, victorious and compassionate. That is the beauty of the Divine as mother. She nourishes all qualities, nurturing the positive. It is like collecting good luck. For example, when you are with the mother  all ‘goodies’ are available. We become meritorious and we gain power to manifest good luck and hold or sustain it as well. Many times life may shower you with courage, prosperity and abundance but your ability to hold and transform this energy into happiness and compassion is lacking. Navaratri is a special time to pray to Durga to have all these qualities together – uniting and harmonising –magnifying and inculcating it in one’s life.
If we are always victorious but not happy it is of no use. Similarly, if we are always making efforts but never succeeding, that is also frustrating. Durga energy can give you all this together. All qualities are available to you as one unit.  We pray to Durga for all these qualities to be instilled in our consciousness,  bringing physical well being,  material fulfillment and spiritual uplift.

Durga is associated with the colour red. She is depicted wearing a red saree. Red is the colour of dynamism – a bright attitude, the ‘moving’ energy. You may be trained and skilled but if you are not able to move things together, move people  or your efforts in unison, the fruits are delayed. But when you pray to Durga, she makes this possible.  The fruit is immediate.
The Mother Divine is Prakriti or this entire creation. Everything is creation is made up of three gunas or qualities: Sattva, rajas and tamas. Sattva is associated with calmness, clarity of mind, enthusiasm and peace. Rajas is needed for action but often creates feverishness. Tamas is inertia and an imbalance in tamas can lead to laziness, dullness and even depression. When you handle tamas properly you move into sattva. Every being in this creation is caught in the play of the gunas. How does one come out of this cycle, and transcend them?
Raise your sattva and come out of the cycle through proper meditation, silence and food control. Transcending the gunas, one gets established in the Shiva tattva or the pure and infinite consciousness. Prakriti is full of opposites like night and day, heat and cold, pain and pleasure, joy and sorrow. Rising above opposites, transcending duality, once again the Shiva tattva is attained.
This is the purpose of all pujas and other rituals during Navratri -- to manifest the unmanifest and unseen energy, the Durga Shakti,  by whose grace one can transcend the gunas and attain the supreme, undivided, indivisible, pure, infinite consciousness.

The author teaches meditation and is Director of Women and Child Welfare programmes of The Art of Living Foundation.

  • There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth: 1.) not going all the way; and 2.) not starting

  • The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, or not to anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly
  • Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared

Divine Messages - 147 : You, Your Desires and Rebirth

You, Your Desires and Rebirth by Yogi Ashwini appeared in the Speaking Tree on Oct 06, 2012

You are what you desire. You take birth because you desire an experience. Depending on your desires, you take up a body; not the body you see in the mirror but what extends beyond to include the five sheaths – annamaya or physical body, pranamaya or life-force, manomaya, vigyanmaya and anandmaya. An ordinary being desires only the physical and exists at the level of the annamaya which in turn is controlled by the prana. The soul stays in the body till there is prana in it. What we call as death, is when there is no prana left in the body and the soul leaves the body.

There are many who have survived near-death experiences …  healers could revive them because there was some prana left in the body and the soul took shelter in that prana. Healers then replenished the pranic body and restored the person back to health. But once the soul leaves the body, it cannot be brought back.

The soul might leave the body, but is still tied to its desires and karmas. Alexander the Great had asked his General to leave his empty hands hanging out of the coffin upon his death to show that you enter and exit empty-handed. But Vedic sages knew that you take with you your desires and karmas and they decide your next birth and body. So if all your life you have desired being looked after, in your next birth you could be a Queen but you could also be a Chihuahua!

The thought of what lies ahead troubles all. There is nothing called a solution or ‘upaya’. A problem is just a manifestation of your negative karmas – you may look at it as the fruit of your wrongdoings or a divine chance to improve your karmic balance or you may continue fooling yourself by looking for solutions. The science of mantras and healing can temporarily stop your karmas from playing out, but they cannot dissolve your karma for you will have to bear the effect of your karmas, sooner or later.

If you have strong desire for being looked after and leading a life of luxury, and have the backing of strong karmas, you might be born to a privileged family in your next birth. If, however, despite the strong desire your karmas do not allow this, you will still be given what you want, but at a lower level of existence - maybe as an exotic pet. Your desires determine what you get but your karmas decide how you get it.

There is no end to desires. King Yayati, even after enjoying youth for a thousand years, was left wanting for more. However, resources are limited, wants are unlimited. So whenever you take more than you need, you are doing it by depriving someone else and hence, adding to your negative karmas. So if you have been born to a good family and still you are busy collecting for yourself, be rest assured your next birth will be a much lower form with similar desires, but with less means to attain them. And it will become a vicious circle of births and deaths, your desires and problems remaining unchanged and your state deteriorating constantly.

You may continue going downwards or change your desires, to elevate to a higher state. So learn to transcend your desires.
