Divine Messages - 169 : Swallow Irritation ... before irritation swallows you ...

Swallow Irritation ... before irritation swallows you and become more centred - Dada J P Vaswani - Appeared in Speaking Tree on 15th December 2012

People today seem to be on a treadmill all the time, on the move all the time, running, running, running — and still in the same place! Rush, rush, rush! Executives are jet setting across the globe. Visiting customers in Nigeria today; meeting with bankers in London tomorrow; trade conferences in Buenos Aires the day after; off to Chicago for a new collaboration afterwards.…

Hurry, hurry, hurry! Mothers are virtually on rollerskates, dropping children at school, going off to work themselves, attending meetings, calling on doctors and bankers, plumbers and electricians, attending to household chores and managing servants. Under these circumstances, is it at all surprising that we are constantly prone to irritations and annoyances? One of my friends, who is a doctor, said to me that many of his patients come to him with sudden outbreaks of high blood pressure. Outwardly, they are calm, dignified individuals. But inwardly, the daily frustrations of life are taking their toll on them!

Snap Dragon Syndrome
By giving in to irritation, we allow our energy levels to drain; our efficiency drastically lowers; and we also lay ourselves open to worse problems that are sure to follow. Have you seen the comic strip where an irate driver kicks the flat tyre of his car — and then howls in pain as his foot is sprained by the kick? Irritations are inevitable. We are going to encounter them wherever we are, whatever we do. If we are wise and mature, we will learn to handle them without paying a heavy price in terms of frayed nerves and acute emotions.

Sheila and Sita are colleagues at a government office. Sheila is late for work one morning, and Sita passes a sarcastic remark about some people who observe their own IST-Indian stretchable time. Sheila is livid, and carries the irritation with herself all day. When she goes back home, she scolds her children and goes to bed complaining of a headache.

When we focus our mind constantly on irritations, we only allow them to linger on and become festering annoyances. The trick is to snap out of irritations and recover our calm and serenity. Better still, we should learn to block out irritations altogether, by adopting a tolerant, calm attitude towards people and events. Sheila can try to be on time. She can find out why she is always running late and plan to overcome tardiness.

Rohan was the assistant manager of the front office of a hotel. A woman had checked into one of the deluxe rooms. Each time she met Rohan, she would shoot off a list of complaints and demands; she would in general make life tough for him. Rohan had to grit his teeth and put up with the client, who was beginning to get on his nerves. He spoke to his mother about her one night, when he went home. “Be patient with her, son, and send out a prayer for her when she annoys you,” advised his mother, who was a wise and compassionate woman. “God knows what’s bothering her, poor soul!”

Rohan decided to follow his mother’s advise. He listened patiently to the woman, attended to her complaints and arranged all that she wanted. A week later, she came down to settle her bill. “I hope you found your stay pleasant ma’am,” Rohan said to her. “We do hope you will come back to stay with us whenever you are in this city.”

An Objective Attitude
To his shock, the woman burst into tears. “Oh, I hope I’ll never, ever come back here,” she said with a sob. “My former husband, who deserted me years ago to run away with another woman, was in the hospital, dying. He asked to see me, and I had to come here so that I could bury the bitter past and help him die in peace. But it has been too much for me! He is dead now, and I must go back and allow my own wound to heal!” Rohan was startled to realise that while he had been battling with the petty irritation caused by her behaviour, she had been passing through a terrible emotional ordeal.

Learn to have an objective, detached and dispassionate attitude to problems. Try to understand why some people behave as they do, and you will find that their behaviour no longer upsets you. It is human tendency to want to hit back at whatever - or whoever - has annoyed you. But it can be an even more satisfying experience when you control your resentment and become the master, not only over yourself, but the situation. See how your life changes for the better.

Divine Messages - 168 : Words of Wisdom by Dada J P Vaswani

Some words of wisdom by Dada J P Vaswani.
  • The tongue has the power to hurt. Also to heal. Be careful of every word you speak. It can affect many lives - including your own.
  • Would you be truly independent? Then learn to depend upon God - and the Guru
  • Count your blessings. Usually we suffer only in one area of our life. There are so many other things for which we should be grateful.
  • Take a piece of paper and make a list of the blessings you still have.
  • Life on earth is like a journey through a dark, dense forest. Association with noble souls is the lamp that will take you across.
  • Expand your heart, keep it pure.....
  • Let your life speak of the religion you follow.
  • So let it be a life of simplicity and sympathy, of humility and love, of service, self-effacement and sacrifice.
  • Many Love God, The Great Giver for his Gifts. Do Thou Love Him not for the gifts he can bestow, but for His own sake.
  • O Lord! Thou hast granted me the gift of life - and many other gifts! Give me an understanding heart
  • Many of us believe that the little we can do, counts for nothing against the vast canvas of the world's misery and suffering. But just as little drops of water together make the ocean, so too little acts of kindness and compassion can and will make a difference

Divine Messages - 164 : Quotes from Speaking Tree

Some quotes from Speaking Tree by Swami Sivananda

  • Your duty is to treat everybody with love as a manifestation of the Lord.
  • Crave for a thing, you will get it. Renounce the craving, the object will follow you by itself.
  • Meditation is the dissolution of thoughts in Eternal awareness or Pure consciousness without objectification, knowing without thinking, merging finitude in infinity.
  • A desire arises in the mind. It is satisfied immediately another comes. In the interval which separates two desires a perfect calm reigns in the mind. It is at this moment freed from all thought, love or hate.
  • Go beyond science, into the region of metaphysics. Real religion is beyond argument. It can only be lived both inwardly and outwardly.
  • Meditation is painful in the beginning but it bestows immortal Bliss and supreme joy in the end.
  • Life is short. Time is fleeting. Realize the Self. Purity of the heart is the gateway to God. Aspire. Renounce. Meditate. Be good; do good. Be kind; be compassionate. Inquire, know Thyself.

Divine Messages - 163 : The Dharma of Money

The Dharma of Money – Shammi Paranjape - Appeared in Speaking Tree on 06th November 2012

Can money buy Grace? When the basics are covered, extra money can buy extra food, clothes, houses and whatever else.  However, you can live in only one house at a time, wear one set of clothes at a time, and eat as much as your stomach can hold at a time. Therefore money is useful to buy goods and services and there is nothing wrong with money, per se. It is after all the core need and everybody’s entitled to earn it in order to have some kind of purchasing power.

Our scriptures go as far as to declare it as artha, one of the four purusharthas of human life-- dharma, artha, kama and moksha.  Yet, money corrupts. Why? According to Sri Sathya Sai Baba this is because the basic and first principle of dharma is bypassed. It is on the basis of dharma that the balance purusharthas have to be worked out.

The key concept is righteousness. Is the money that you earn acquired and used in a righteous way? Everybody has the right to earn a living and be recompensed for their labour. The trouble starts when money becomes the ultimate goal and end in itself. This leads to a distorted perspective that in turn could lead to hoarding of wealth. According to Baba, “Wealth accumulated beyond unreasonable levels intoxicates the self and breeds destructive desires and habits. Riches, when one comes by them, have to be revered as something given on trust, and the surplus must be used for the betterment of society and for helping the needy and less fortunate.’’

Scriptures say that a portion of one’s wealth ought to be earmarked for charitable purposes and such an attitude of benevolence earns valuable merit.  It is believed that only when you give, you get -- sometimes ten or hundred-fold. However, for all the noble exhortations of sacred scriptures, the thrall of money weakens even the best resolve. Excessive wealth is not only seen as a symbol of worth, it creates a false sense of status and power.

The gains of material wealth are never reliable or lasting. Moreover, unrighteously acquired wealth is bound to lead to karmic consequences. Every act, whether good or bad, will germinate with time, according to scriptures. Sri Sathya Sai Baba would say that man’s primary endeavour should be to earn the Grace of the Lord, which can confer everything, both material and spiritual. Baba says, “Tthe riches that you should strive to amass are not fields, factories, bungalows or bank- balances but the wisdom and experience of oneness with the grandeur of the Force that runs this universe, without a hitch. Arjuna is called Dhananjay by Krishna because he won (jaya) the wealth (dhan) that saves man and not that which can be taxed, stolen or transferred. The method of winning these riches is through practice of sadhana.., and living a righteous life.’’

Man strives hard  and unceasingly for accumulating the riches of the world. However, all these riches that are so sought after do not have the quality of eternal nature – for ultimately it all turns to dust! The material world is but transitory; hence to invest too much into it at the cost of spiritual growth could prove detrimental. It would be well worth our while to take some time off to pause, and try earn that inner wealth too, that can make Dhananjayas out of us. Then we could call ourselves masters of that wealth which truly counts.

Divine Messages - 162 : Quotes from Speaking Tree

Some quotes from Speaking Tree by Swami Vivekananda
  • It is feeling that is the life, the strength, the vitality, without which no amount of intellectual activity can reach God
  • To me the very essence of education is concentration of the mind, not the collecting of facts
  • Thank God for giving you this world as a moral gymnasium to help your development, but never imagine you can help the world
  • Neither seek nor avoid; take what comes. It is liberty to be affected by nothing. Do not merely endure; be unattached
  • We see that the apparent contradictions and perplexities in every RELIGION mark but different stages of growth. The end of all religions is the realizing of God in the soul. That is the one universal religion.'
  • Let all your nerves vibrate through the backbone of your religion
  • Learning and wisdom are superfluities, the surface glitter merely, but it is the heart that is the seat of all power. It is not in the brain but in the heart that the Atman, possessed of knowledge, power, and activity, has its seat.

Divine Messages - 161 : Live Life Of A Zen

Live Life Of A Zen – Bina Jhaveri - Appeared in Speaking Tree on 26th October 2012

Life coach BINA JHAVERI, tells you how to make each day feel like a blessing

Am I really living my life to its full potential? This is a question you need to ask yourself. It will prompt you to think. It will lead to inner curiosity, introspection, perhaps even confusion. But eventually, you will figure out what is it that adds meaning to your life. It will determine whether you live a life of Zen. Living in Zen means living “awake,” full of spirit and mindfulness. It means tapping into your natural way of being intelligently and consciously. It enables you to live in accordance with your life’s passions, explore your potential with more creativity and confidence, discover inspired communication and heightened leadership abilities. This way of life is so powerful that it makes every day feel like a blessing.

The purpose of living in Zen is to recognise our innate qualities - love, courage, strength and spaciousness in order to understand them on a deeper level. This enlightened state enables you to slowly release negative judgement of self and others so that you can live more freely and positively, allowing peacefulness to co-exist all around. But how do you do that? What is the formula for this blissful existence?

Listen to your inner voice and let it guide you: Only when we are able to be still and ask questions to our inner self, can we achieve oneness with our inner guide. This means staying open to possibilities and believing that everything is exactly the way it is meant to be. Let this wisdom guide you forward every day. But, first, you must learn to listen consciously.

Fix things in your life by trying not to fix: Sometimes what we require is silent support through a deeper sense of understanding and acceptance of things that happen in our lives. We don’t necessarily need to come up with a solution or quick fix right away. Deeper pondering and exploration of situations eventually lead to self-solutions. Things naturally work out as they are intended to. So learn to let go and live more freely.

Stay in the now and connect with yourself: Stay present with what is “alive” within you right now. Is it joy, love, excitement or anticipation? Being present with what your body, mind and spirit are telling you, means you are in congruence with them. This creates a radiant effect. Most perceived problems manifest because there is a disconnect with who you are. Learn to love and respect yourself as a whole person; don’t break yourself up into parts.

Be forgiving of others and of yourself; don’t beat yourself up: Discover more of your natural energies and inner resources. There are several ways to achieve this. Meditation and deep breathing, yoga, chanting and various therapies. Spending time alone regularly will also teach you to forgive yourself and others more easily. It’s only through forgiveness that we can accept. And only through acceptance can we do justice to the present moment. So begin living in fullness.

Try to support others in their life’s journey: Living in Zen also entails having higher responsibilities. At times, it means taking the higher road and being solid enough to get past petty hurdles and support others in their life’s journey. It also involves being there for others as they find their way back to themselves. Be patient and learn to allow others to grow in their own way and complete their own journey.

Allow your heart to lead you: Listening to your heart welcomes a relaxed way of being. It creates abundance and fullness all around you. Your true nature shines when you are happy and in turn, you notice and bring out the best in others. Let your heart lead your thoughts, ideas, conversations and positive beliefs. You will magically begin spreading love, bliss and a beautiful and contagious energy all around you.

Living in Zen allows you to be the master of your life. It allows you to grow, while creating support for others through a demonstration of peace, strength and courage. It is one of the most gracious ways to live your life. So make a conscious decision to begin taking little steps each day, week and month, towards yourself. And as you focus more inward, your journey outward will automatically become more confident, purposeful, enhanced and rewarding.

Divine Messages - 160: Grasping The Present Moment

Grasping The Present Moment - Dada J P Vaswani - Appeared in Speaking Tree on 31st October 2012

Life is often compared to a book, each chapter representing one particular phase of our life; but there is one major difference between my life and my book; I cannot turn back the pages of my life. I cannot revisit the past except in my memories. Nor can I read the final chapter of my life before its due time. Life has to be lived in the present.

Two sisters were travelling by train from Jammu to Kanyakumari. Due to adverse weather conditions, the train halted at a station in central India, until conditions improved, and the tracks were cleared. The passengers were stuck on the train for hours together. The older sister was annoyed, irritated and frustrated; she railed and ranted; she complained bitterly to the TTE and the conductors, who were helpless themselves; she sulked endlessly and became a source of annoyance to all her fellow travellers.

The younger sister on the other hand, refused to allow her spirits to be dampened by the delay. She went around cheerfully, making friends with the others, exchanging jokes, playing with children, starting singing sessions in different carriages, conducting quiz contests to keep young people occupied, and generally spreading good cheer all around. Strangers responded to her, sharing their food with her, inviting her to join their group, and enthusiastically joining her efforts to 'organise' games for the entertainment of all.

When the train finally reached its destination, the older sister was morose, depressed and tired. She felt that her time had been wasted. As for the younger sister, she had had the time of her life! She had made so many new friends, she had had such new experiences, and she had managed to retain her good mood and her good humour all along. She had enjoyed the journey, despite the delays and the setbacks and all the little inconveniences. She had made the most of the present.

Living in the present maximises all the possibilities that life offers to us. We are able to focus on what is happening around us, and savour all those little joys and pleasures that are available in the here-and-now.

The past is over and done with; the future is in God's hands; the best that anyone can do is to live in the present, wisely and well. Every day will have its own share of challenges, difficulties, rewards and achievements: why should we complicate matters by dragging our regrets of the past and fears of the future into the present?

The trouble with most of us is that we hardly ever dwell on the happy experiences that we have had in the past. Most of us seem to have a permanent love affair with the sorrows, regrets and failures of the past. We hold on to these bitter memories, refusing to let go. In a beautiful sonnet on the theme of remembrance, Shakespeare compares this attitude to repaying old debts that have already been settled long ago!

Imagine that you have taken a housing loan, and have paid it off diligently over a period of years. After the whole thing is over, will you keep transferring money to your loan account just because you like to dwell on your own past? Is that not futile and foolish, apart from being a waste of your money? So why dwell on past memories that are negative and bitter? This too, is emotional waste of a high order!

The past is over and done. The future is yet to come. What is real is the present moment. Let us make the best use of the present. Let us make it beautiful.

Fwd: Divine Messages - 159 : God and I

God And I  - Dada J P Vaswani - Appeared in Speaking Tree on 22nd October 2012

The great ancient epics of Indian literature depict the struggle within the self as a war between two armies. In the Mahabharata, the war is between the Kauravas and the Pandavas. In the Ramayana, it is between Ravana's rakshasas and Sri Rama's vanaras. These physical battles are representative of man's struggle with life and the inner conflict that rages within him.

In the Ramayana, the battle between Sri Rama and Ravana, may be seen as the struggle between the higher self (representing qualities of forgiveness, kindness and compassion) and the lower self (representing qualities of aggression, desire and violence). Sri Rama is symbolic of all that is noble and virtuous. Ravana is symbolic of aggression and force. Man has the free will, he has the freedom to choose between the Kauravas and the Pandavas or between Sri Rama and Ravana. Very often man wavers and joins the army of the evil forces. His wrong choice lands him in trouble.

For, as the epic tells us:

Yatra yogeshwara Krishno yatra Partho dhanurdhara
Tatra Sri-Vijayo bhutir Dhruva nitirmatir mamah

In other words: "Where there is the Lord of Yoga Sri Krishna; where there is the Lord of Archery Arjuna, are to be found victory and good fortune in My opinion; as also steadfastness and good governance". Hindu tradition calls this sangati sanga dosha: your friends and associates will determine your virtues and vices.

If we wish to be true winners in the battle of life, we too must make the right choice; we must choose good over evil, we must choose God above all else. For, it is always Sri Rama or Sri Krishna who is the ultimate winner. It is for us to choose to be with the winner. After all, no one wants to be a loser, even on the physical 'earthly' level.

Divine Messages - 158 : Kaikeyi Knew She Would Be Abused, Hated And Disliked

Kaikeyi Knew She Would Be Abused, Hated And Disliked by Seema Burman appeared in the Speaking Tree on Mar 26, 2012

The queen who got Rama sent away to the forest in exile was merely abiding by a cosmic plan.

Rama accorded Kaikeyi full respect; he gave her his abode and released her from the cycle of births and deaths. Yet Rama’s devotees find it difficult to forgive her for banishing him to the forest. Tulasidas, however,  says it was all a Cosmic Play to destroy the demons. But devotees argue that Rama could have gone to the forest anyway, to destroy the demons. Why drag Sita along? Yet a reading of Ramayana shows that all those who met Rama, Sita and Lakshmana were blessed and they attained life’s goal by seeing, meeting, serving, talking to Rama. Many lives were transformed by the vision of Rama with Sita and Lakshmana. Only one person was forever disgraced and disrespected, and that person was Kaikeyi.

No girl is named Kaikeyi lest she takes on her characteristics. This is the bhakti perspective as Kaikeyi is seen in negative light. A jnani would know that what Kaikeyi contributed to the Cosmic Drama. Hers was the greatest sacrifice as she embraced infamy forever. Rama acknowledges her sacrifice and gives her due respect when they all come to meet him in the forest and when he comes back to Ayodhya later.

Kaikeyi’s maid Manthara’s motives are clear as she wanted to serve the king’s mother. But Kaikeyi’s change of behaviour is strange. Kaikeyi was the daughter of King Ashwapati and the only sister of seven brothers. She was brave, daring, rode chariots, fought wars, was extremely beautiful, played instruments, sang and danced. King Dasaratha saw her on a hunting expedition in Kashmir and fell in love with her. Kaikeyi’s father extracted a promise that her son (his grandson) would ascend the throne. Dasaratha agreed as he had no son from any of his wives. But Kaikeyi did not bear a son and so Dasaratha married Sumitra.

It is only in old age that Dasaratha gets four sons due to a yagna ceremony and Rama is the beloved of all. Kaikeyi loves Rama more than her own son Bharata, so it was inconceivable that she would banish Rama to the forest for 14 years. Sages say all this was going according to a Cosmic Plan. Just as there are several grounds for God’s incarnation as Rama and the creation of Ravana, there are several reasons for Kaikeyi’s actions. Firstly, Dasaratha had promised the throne to Kaikeyi’s son and the promise had to be honoured as was the rule of the Raghu Dynasty- ‘Praan jaaye par vachan na jaaye’- ‘Our words must be honoured even at the cost of our life.’ Second, as a child, Rama told Kaikeyi that since he was the incarnation of Vishnu, he  needed an excuse to destroy demons and save sages. He needed someone to banish Him for 14 years and chose Kaikeyi as she was the boldest of the queens. Thirdly, as a child, Kaikeyi had blackened the face of a sage in meditation and he cursed her that she too would get a similar black reputation.

Ramkatha exponent Morari Bapu, gives us a fourth reason. Kaikeyi’s guru Sage Ratna, an astrologer, predicted that she would marry the king of Ayodhya who would die due of grief for his sons. To save the Raghu Dynasty, Kaikeyi would have to ensure that for 14 years no one sat on the throne for that would lead to misfortune. Sage Ratna was father of Shravan Kumar’s grandparents. Shravan Kumar was later killed accidentally by King Dasaratha’s arrow. Shravan Kumar’s grandfather was Sage Dhoumya whose parents were Ratnavali and Sage Ratna. Sage Ratna was a royal priest of Nandigram ruled by King Ashwapati. Sage Ratna had warned her that life as a queen would be very testing and her husband would die of grief for his son. Guru Vasishtha knew of this and decided that grief for son could be death of a son so rather than one son and king dying it would be better that only the king dies. So grief of separation was introduced and Dasaratha was allowed to die. Vasishtha advised Kaikeyi to ask for her two boons -- for Rama to be exiled for 14 years and throne for Bharata. He knew that Bharata would never sit on the throne as long as Rama was living. It was Vasishtha who advised Bharata to install Rama's wooden slippers on the throne if Rama disagreed to return to Ayodhya. The whole drama was planned and the players merely acted.

Kaikeyi had been given two boons for her fighting skills. When Indra, king of gods, requested Dasaratha to fight demon Samhasura, Kaikeyi accompanied him. In the battle Dasaratha’s chariot wheel got loose and Kaikeyi put her little finger in the spoke. Soon she took the chariot to a safe place, changed the wheel, nursed the wounded king and again went in the battlefield and they won. Dasaratha promised her two boons which she laughed away. She had forgotten about these boons but not Vashishtha and Manthara. They advised her to use these boons, but the intentions were different.
Kaikeyi inherited obstinacy from her mother.  Once when King Ashwapati  and his queen were strolling he heard a pair of birds talking and laughed uncontrollably. Ashwapati, King of Kashmir, had the boon of understanding language of birds, insects and animals. The queen wanted to know what the bird had said but the king replied that according to the boon if he disclosed it  he would die. The queen said she didn’t care whether he lived or died but he must tell her what the birds had said. The king banished her forever to her parental home. Kaikeyi was raised by maid Manthara who wanted Kaikeyi to enjoy the highest status.

Kaikeyi knew she would be abused, hated and disliked for all times to come but she agreed to be a part of God’s lila or play.

Divine Messages - 153 : Quotes from Speaking Tree

Some quotes from Speaking Tree by Swami Vivekananda
  • When we come to non-attachment, then we can understand the marvelous mystery of the universe: how it is intense activity and at the same time intense peace, how it is work every moment and rest every moment
  • We must approach religion with reverence and with love, and our heart will stand up and say, this is truth, and this is untruth
  • This is the first lesson to learn: be determined not to curse anything outside, not to lay the blame upon anyone outside, but stand up, lay the blame on yourself. You will find that is always true. Get hold of yourself
  • There is only one sin. That is weakness.... The only saint is that soul that never weakens, faces everything, and determines to die game
  • HOW to worship Him? through love. He is to be worshiped as the one beloved dear than everything in this and the next life .
  • All who have actually attained any real religious experience never wrangle over the form in which the different religions are expressed. They know that the soul of all religions is the same and so they have no quarrel with anybody just because he or she does not speak in the same tongue
  • All who have actually attained any real religious experience never wrangle over the form in which the different religions are expressed. They know that the soul of all religions is the same and so they have no quarrel with anybody just because he or she does not speak in the same tongue
  • THROUGH prayer, the love of God grows and assumes a form which is called supreme devotion. Forms vanish, rituals fly away, books are superseded, images, temples, churches, religions and sects, countries and nationalities - all these little limitations and bondage's fall off by their own nature from him who knows this love of God.
  • The power of purity—it is a definite power
  • PRAYER is divine love alone. When this highest ideal of love is reached, philosophy is thrown away. Who will then care of it ? Freedom, salvation, nirvana- all are thrown away. Who cares to become free while in the enjoyment of divine love?
  • TO worship God even for the sake of salvation or any other reward is equally degenerate. Love knows no reward. Give your love unto to God, but do not ask anything in return even from Him through pray.

Divine Messages - 152 : Navaratri Invokes The Moving Force

Navaratri Invokes The Moving Force by Bhanumathi Narasimhan appeared in the Speaking Tree on Oct 15, 2012

We float in the effulgence of one scintillating unseen cosmic energy called the ‘Devi,’ Divine Mother, womb of all creation. She is the seed of all dynamism, radiance, beauty, equanimity, peace and nourishment. She is the life force energy.

Devi, as Goddess Durga is epitomised as Shakti who wards off all evil. Durga also means hill. Something difficult is often described as an uphill task. In the presence of Durga Shakti, negative forces fade away.
Durga is referred to as ‘Jaya Durga’ or the one who brings jai or victory. She is Durgatipariharini – one who removes obstacles. She transforms negativity into positivity. Even difficulties find it difficult to come near her.
When you pray to Mother Divine as Durga, you become courageous, victorious and compassionate. That is the beauty of the Divine as mother. She nourishes all qualities, nurturing the positive. It is like collecting good luck. For example, when you are with the mother  all ‘goodies’ are available. We become meritorious and we gain power to manifest good luck and hold or sustain it as well. Many times life may shower you with courage, prosperity and abundance but your ability to hold and transform this energy into happiness and compassion is lacking. Navaratri is a special time to pray to Durga to have all these qualities together – uniting and harmonising –magnifying and inculcating it in one’s life.
If we are always victorious but not happy it is of no use. Similarly, if we are always making efforts but never succeeding, that is also frustrating. Durga energy can give you all this together. All qualities are available to you as one unit.  We pray to Durga for all these qualities to be instilled in our consciousness,  bringing physical well being,  material fulfillment and spiritual uplift.

Durga is associated with the colour red. She is depicted wearing a red saree. Red is the colour of dynamism – a bright attitude, the ‘moving’ energy. You may be trained and skilled but if you are not able to move things together, move people  or your efforts in unison, the fruits are delayed. But when you pray to Durga, she makes this possible.  The fruit is immediate.
The Mother Divine is Prakriti or this entire creation. Everything is creation is made up of three gunas or qualities: Sattva, rajas and tamas. Sattva is associated with calmness, clarity of mind, enthusiasm and peace. Rajas is needed for action but often creates feverishness. Tamas is inertia and an imbalance in tamas can lead to laziness, dullness and even depression. When you handle tamas properly you move into sattva. Every being in this creation is caught in the play of the gunas. How does one come out of this cycle, and transcend them?
Raise your sattva and come out of the cycle through proper meditation, silence and food control. Transcending the gunas, one gets established in the Shiva tattva or the pure and infinite consciousness. Prakriti is full of opposites like night and day, heat and cold, pain and pleasure, joy and sorrow. Rising above opposites, transcending duality, once again the Shiva tattva is attained.
This is the purpose of all pujas and other rituals during Navratri -- to manifest the unmanifest and unseen energy, the Durga Shakti,  by whose grace one can transcend the gunas and attain the supreme, undivided, indivisible, pure, infinite consciousness.

The author teaches meditation and is Director of Women and Child Welfare programmes of The Art of Living Foundation.

  • The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, or not to anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly
  • Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared

Divine Messages - 147 : You, Your Desires and Rebirth

You, Your Desires and Rebirth by Yogi Ashwini appeared in the Speaking Tree on Oct 06, 2012

You are what you desire. You take birth because you desire an experience. Depending on your desires, you take up a body; not the body you see in the mirror but what extends beyond to include the five sheaths – annamaya or physical body, pranamaya or life-force, manomaya, vigyanmaya and anandmaya. An ordinary being desires only the physical and exists at the level of the annamaya which in turn is controlled by the prana. The soul stays in the body till there is prana in it. What we call as death, is when there is no prana left in the body and the soul leaves the body.

There are many who have survived near-death experiences …  healers could revive them because there was some prana left in the body and the soul took shelter in that prana. Healers then replenished the pranic body and restored the person back to health. But once the soul leaves the body, it cannot be brought back.

The soul might leave the body, but is still tied to its desires and karmas. Alexander the Great had asked his General to leave his empty hands hanging out of the coffin upon his death to show that you enter and exit empty-handed. But Vedic sages knew that you take with you your desires and karmas and they decide your next birth and body. So if all your life you have desired being looked after, in your next birth you could be a Queen but you could also be a Chihuahua!

The thought of what lies ahead troubles all. There is nothing called a solution or ‘upaya’. A problem is just a manifestation of your negative karmas – you may look at it as the fruit of your wrongdoings or a divine chance to improve your karmic balance or you may continue fooling yourself by looking for solutions. The science of mantras and healing can temporarily stop your karmas from playing out, but they cannot dissolve your karma for you will have to bear the effect of your karmas, sooner or later.

If you have strong desire for being looked after and leading a life of luxury, and have the backing of strong karmas, you might be born to a privileged family in your next birth. If, however, despite the strong desire your karmas do not allow this, you will still be given what you want, but at a lower level of existence - maybe as an exotic pet. Your desires determine what you get but your karmas decide how you get it.

There is no end to desires. King Yayati, even after enjoying youth for a thousand years, was left wanting for more. However, resources are limited, wants are unlimited. So whenever you take more than you need, you are doing it by depriving someone else and hence, adding to your negative karmas. So if you have been born to a good family and still you are busy collecting for yourself, be rest assured your next birth will be a much lower form with similar desires, but with less means to attain them. And it will become a vicious circle of births and deaths, your desires and problems remaining unchanged and your state deteriorating constantly.

You may continue going downwards or change your desires, to elevate to a higher state. So learn to transcend your desires.
