Divine Messages - 79 : The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna by 'M'ahendranath Gupta - Entanglement of Householders

Extracts from the book "The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna" by 'M'ahendranath Gupta (conversations between Sri Ramakrishna, the Master, and his disciples / devotees)

Entanglement of householders

Speaking of householders entangled in worldliness, the Master said: "They are like the silk-worm.  They can come out of the cocoon of their worldly life if they wish.  But they can't bear to; for they themselves have built the cocoon with great love and care.  So they die there.  Or they are like the fish in a trap.  They can come out of it by the way they entered, but they sport inside the trap with other fish and hear the sweet sound of the murmuring water and forget everything else.  They don't even make an effort to free themselves from the trap.  The lisping of children is the murmur of the water; and the other fish are relatives and friends.  Only one or two make good their escape by running away.  They are the liberated souls."

Worldly people’s lack perseverance

Then, addressing the devotees, Sri Ramakrishna said: "The spiritual wisdom of worldly people is seen only on rare occasions.  It is like the flame of a candle.  No, it is rather like a single ray of the sun passing through a chink in a wall.  Worldly people chant the name of God, but there is no zeal behind it.  It is like children's swearing by God, having learnt the word from the quarrels of their aunts.”

"Worldly people have no grit.  If they succeed in an undertaking, it is all right, but if they don't succeed, it scarcely bothers them at all.  When they need water, they begin to dig a well.  But as soon as they strike a stone, they give up digging there and begin at another place.  Perhaps they come to a bed of sand.  Finding nothing but sand, they give that place up too.  How can they succeed in getting water unless they continue to dig persistently where they started?”

"Man reaps the harvest of his own past actions.  Hence you read in the song:

O Mother, I have no one else to blame:
Alas! I sink in the well these very hands have dug.

" 'I' and 'mine'-that is ignorance.  By discriminating you will realize that what you call 'I' is really nothing but Ātman.  Reason it out.  Are you the body or the flesh or something else? At the end you will know that you are none of these.  You are free from attributes.  Then you will realize that you have never been the doer of any action, that you have been free from virtue and faults alike, that you are beyond righteousness and unrighteousness.”

"From ignorance a man says, 'This is gold and this is brass.' But a man of Knowledge says, 'It is all gold.'

"Reasoning stops when one sees God.  But there are instances of people who have realized God and who still continue to reason.  Again, there are people who, even after having seen God, chant His name with devotion and sing His glories.”

"How long does a child cry? So long as it is not sucking at its mother's breast.  As soon as it is nursed it stops crying.  Then the child feels only joy.  Joyously it drinks the milk from its mother's breast.  But it is also true that, while drinking, the child sometimes plays and laughs.”

"It is God alone who has become everything.  But in man He manifests Himself the most.  God is directly present in the man who has the pure heart of a child and who laughs and cries and dances and sings in divine ecstasy."

Solitude for householders

"Even if one lives in the world, one must go into solitude now and then. It will be of great help to a man if he goes away from his family, lives alone, and weeps for God even for three days.  Even if he thinks of God for one day in solitude, when he has the leisure, that too will do him good.  People shed a whole jug of tears for wife and children.  But who cries for the Lord? Now and then one must go into solitude and practise spiritual discipline to realize God.  Living in the world and entangled in many of its duties, the aspirant, during the first stage of spiritual life, finds many obstacles in the path of concentration.  While the trees on the foot-path are young, they must he fenced around; otherwise they will be destroyed by cattle.  The fence is necessary when the tree is young, but it can be taken away when the trunk is thick and strong.  Then the tree won't be hurt even if an elephant is tied to it. “

Malady of worldly people and its cure

"The disease of worldliness is like typhoid.  And there are a huge jug of water and a jar of savoury pickles in the typhoid patient's room.  If you want to cure him of his illness, you must remove him from that room.  The worldly man is like the typhoid patient.  The various objects of enjoyment are the huge jug of water, and the craving for their enjoyment is his thirst.  The very thought of pickles makes the mouth water; you don't have to bring them near.  And he is surrounded with them.  The companionship of woman is the pickles.  Hence treatment in solitude is necessary.

"One may enter the world after attaining discrimination and dispassion.  In the ocean of the world there are six alligators: lust, anger, and so forth.  But you need not fear the alligators if you smear your body with turmeric before you go into the water.  Discrimination and dispassion are the turmeric.  Discrimination is the knowledge of what is real and what is unreal.  It is the realization that God alone is the real and eternal Substance and that all else is unreal, transitory, impermanent.  And you must cultivate intense zeal for God.  You must feel love for Him and be attracted to Him. The gopis of Vrindāvan felt the attraction of Krishna.“

Divine Messages - 78 : The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna by 'M'ahendranath Gupta - Futility of Reasoning and God-Realisation

Extracts from the book “The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna” by ‘M’ahendranath Gupta (conversations between Sri Ramakrishna, the Master, and his disciples / devotees)

Futility of Reasoning

MASTER (to Rākhāl ): "It is not good to reason too much.  First comes God, and then the world.  Realize God first; then you will know all about His world.
(To M. and Rākhāl ) If first one is introduced to Jadu Mallick, then one can know everything about him-the number of his houses, gardens, government securities, and so on.  For this reason the rishi Nārada advised Valmiki1 to repeat the word 'mara'.  'Ma' means God, and 'ra' the world.  First comes God, and then the world.  Krishnakishore said that the word 'mara' is a holy mantra because it was given to Valmiki by the rishi.  'Ma' means God, and 'rā' the world."

"Therefore, like Valmiki, one should at first renounce everything and cry to God in solitude with a longing heart.  The first thing necessary is the vision of God; then comes reasoning-about the scriptures and the world."

(To M.) "That is why I have been telling you not to reason any more.  I came from the pine-grove to say that to you.  Through too much reasoning your spiritual life will be injured; you will at last become like Hazra.  I used to roam at night in the streets, all alone, and cry to the Divine Mother, 'O Mother, blight with Thy thunderbolt my desire to reason!' Tell me that you won't reason any more."

M: "Yes, sir.  I won't reason any more."

MASTER: "Everything can be achieved through bhakti alone.  Those who want the Knowledge of Brahman will certainly achieve that also by following the trail of bhakti. "

"Can a man blessed with the grace of God ever lack Knowledge? At Kamarpukur I have seen grain-dealers measuring paddy.  As one heap is measured away another heap is pushed forward to be measured.  The Mother supplies the devotees with the 'heap' of Knowledge."

"After attaining God, one looks on a pundit as mere straw and dust.  Padmalochan said to me: 'What does it matter if I accompany you to a meeting at the house of a fisherman?2  With you I can dine even at the house of a pariah."

"Everything can be realized simply through love of God.  If one is able to love God, one does not lack anything.  Kartika and Ganesa were seated near Bhagavati, who had a necklace of gems around Her neck.  The Divine Mother said to them, 'I will present this necklace to him who is the first to go around the universe.' Thereupon Kartika, without losing a moment, set out on the peacock, his carrier.  Ganesa, on the other hand, in a leisurely fashion went around the Divine Mother and prostrated himself before Her.  He knew that She contained within Herself the entire universe.  The Divine Mother was pleased with him and put the necklace around his neck.  After a long while Kartika returned and found his brother seated there with the necklace on."

Two ways of God-realization

MASTER: "There are two ways.  One is the path of discrimination, the other is that of love.  Discrimination means to know the distinction between the Real and the unreal.  God alone is the real and permanent Substance; all else is illusory and impermanent.  The magician alone is real; his magic is illusory.  This is discrimination."

"Discrimination and renunciation.  Discrimination means to know the distinction between the Real and the unreal.  Renunciation means to have dispassion for the things of the world.  One cannot acquire them all of a sudden.  They must be practised every day.  One should renounce 'woman and gold' mentally at first.  Then, by the will of God, one can renounce it both mentally and outwardly.  It is impossible to ask the people of Calcutta to renounce all for the sake of God.  One has to tell them to renounce mentally."

Constant practice urged

"Through the discipline of constant practice one is able to give up attachment to 'woman and gold'.  That is what the Gita says.  By practice one acquires uncommon power of mind.  Then one doesn't find it difficult to subdue the sense-organs and to bring anger, lust, and the like under control.  Such a man behaves like a tortoise, which, once it has tucked in its limbs, never puts them out.  You cannot make the tortoise put its limbs out again, though you chop it to pieces with an axe."

Divine Messages - 77 : Krishna is Christ Consciousness

Krishna is Christ Consciousness by Sonal Srivastava - Appeared in Speaking Tree on 23rd December 2011

Krishna is poorna or complete. He manifests perfection, an ideal being, who knows how to live, love, fulfil his duties and fight, if need be. "I would like to walk the path that Krishna advocates in the Bhagavad Gita. His is a path of love; to give your 100% to everything that you do and surrender the result of your actions to Him," says Mansi, a PhD student in Mumbai. Mridula Bhatia and Poonam Jain make regular visits to the church to pray Neither is Christian, yet they are able to connect with Christ.

"I feel his presence sometimes in the Church," says Bhatia, a Delhi University student. "I may not follow Christ religiously, but i definitely want to cultivate qualities that are associated with him. He always talked of love and service." Both Krishna and Jesus embody Supreme Consciousness. A state of being aware, at all times, of all our actions Jesus said: "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you." That kingdom can be accessed not by idolising Jesus, but by attuning yourself with him; by being mindful of the Divinity that you and I are a part of, the Divinity personified by Jesus and Krishna.

"In the divine plan, Christ was responsible for the evolution of the West, and Krishna, for that of the East. It was intended that the West specialise in developing objectively, through logic and reason, and that the East specialise in inner, intuitive development. But in the cosmic plan, the time has come to combine these two lines into one East and West must unite," Paramhansa Yogananda wrote in Autobiography of A Yogi. Logic and rationale must be combined with inner intuitive wisdom to reach that perfected state of being.

Swami Kriyananda recalls, "Yogananda said it was Jesus himself who appeared to Babaji (Yogananda's guru) and asked him to send this teaching of Self-realisation to the West." He adds, "At that meeting, Yogananda told us, Jesus said, 'My followers have forgotten the art of divine inner communion. Outwardly they do good works, but they have lost sight of the most important of my teachings, to seek the Kingdom of God first.'"

In the Gita, Krishna spoke of surrendering the mind to Him He said, "Still yourself in me, and without a doubt you shall be united with me, Lord of love, dwelling in your heart."

Both Krishna and Jesus spoke of merging the self with God. The state of enlightenment is the highest state of intellectual development and emotional maturity. Masters who realise the Self have the emotional intelligence to lead others to it "Great masters have that level of consciousness For us, it is difficult even to visualise such a state. By attuning ourselves to them, we begin to sense what it is they have, and to develop that same consciousness in ourselves," says Swami Kriyananda referring to his guru Paramhansa Yogananda.

"You can know Jesus only through a man who has attained to Christ Consciousness. A Krishna can be known only through a man who has attained Krishna Consciousness. And they are the same thing: Krishna Consciousness. Christ Consciousness, Buddha Consciousness - the transcendental," says Osho In the end, it's all about becoming a better human being - doing everything with a smile and making life a happy experience for everyone journeying towards transcendence.

Divine Messages - 74 : Glimpses of the Divine Vision by Swami Ramdas - Concentration

An extract from the book “Glimpses of the Divine Vision” by Swami Ramdas – Section “Concentration”

·         For concentration it is essential that the mind should fix itself on one thought to the exclusion of every other. So, one sound ringing in the ear and the heart, and one ideal or Ishta meditated upon in the mind-both representing or symbolizing the great ultimate Reality-must be adopted for practice. If this is not done, concentration, which itself denotes one-pointedness of mind, will be impossible. This does not mean that one should dislike other Ishtas or names standing for God.

·         Faith and practice combined can enable an aspirant to overcome any and every difficulty that confronts him in his struggle for control of mind. Surely, the Kripa or grace of a saint is essential. Under his guidance and influence, the Sadhaka progresses rapidly towards the goal. But your own effort is also as essential. Tamasic inactivity or Rajasic activity are obstacles. A selfless and one-pointed endeavour is alone conducive to real concentration and the ultimate attainment. Your life is in your hands: elevate it, purify it and fill it with the bliss of immortality. May God within you be your guide.

·         By practice or Abhyas you can attain everything you aspire to. What is needed is determination and perseverance. Don’t feel weak. The infinite power of God is within you. In all practices draw strength from this source. Nothing can be achieved without struggle and effort. To control the mind you require indomitable energy. This you can gain by a steady practice. If at first you cannot fix your mind by Japa, don’t be disheartened; continue Japa with persistence and you will gradually find that the restless nature of the mind is quelled. Court solitude during off hours, and the society of the devotees of God. You need not keep account of Japa. This will distract your mind. Have the Name of God always on your lips. Don’t read literature that disturbs your mind. Have system, regularity, and discipline in your life. Have meditation or silent mental repetition in a place free from noise. Rise early. Don’t fritter away your mental and physical energies. Be moderate in all things that you do. Your progress depends on yourself. Truth cannot be handed over by one to the other. Each has to work for it by his own initiative and strength; because Truth is nowhere else, but in each one of you. Believe God’s blessings are ever on you.March forward and reach the goal of immortality and peace-a state which is your own real being.

·         Any symbol of God that you place before you for adoration should, through a gradual process, awaken within you a sense of immortality; and when the ultimate state of sustained God consciousness is attained, there should not be any need for an external symbol to hang on. God as teacher from outside can only awaken you to the Reality; but the necessary condition for such an awakening has to be created by your own aspiration, struggle and discipline. The teachers point to the path that leads to the highest goal of human life. But it lies in the aspirant to walk the path. A discipline of self-control can alone grant you the necessary strength for moving boldly on this path.

·         Through a discipline of concentration alone the mind regains its lost powers. You must strictly regulate your life and give up all dissipating activities of both the mind and the body. The uncontrolled and ill-used faculties are responsible for the confusion that besets life. Make it a rule to get up early in the morning, and devote some time for the contemplation of the great and immortal Truth who is all power, knowledge, peace and bliss dwelling within you. By a practice of such a meditation, you will recover the fading powers of your intellect. You may depend upon it that your memory will become keen, and the assimilating strength of your mind will be marvellously increased. Lead a pure and simple life filled with an activity which is beneficial to the people around you. Let your heart cherish noble ideals. The teachings and lives of great and selfless souls infuse energy and enthusiasm in your life. In short, be a power for good in the world.

·         Solitude is an invaluable help to keep the mind ever in tune with the indwelling infinite Reality. It is something like recharging the exhausted battery of life, so that life's mission in the world may bear ampler and more glorious fruit. May the Lord make you a supreme instrument in His hands for the magnificent service to humanity. In fact, service is the keynote of a selfless and dedicated life. The spirit of love and service daunts every danger and boldly faces and endures hard toil and great suffering which it meets in the path towards its fulfilment. Trials and obstacles are only to steel the will for the purpose.

·         For concentration of mind and control of senses, a steady and uninterrupted course of meditation and utterance of the divine Name is prescribed. This is an unfailing Sadhana.

Divine Messages - 73 : God Spoke To Me by Eileen Caddy - Sincerity - 2/2

An extract from the book “God Spoke To Me” by Eileen Caddy – Section “Sincerity”

·       ALL ARE MADE IN MY IMAGE - I have asked you constantly to expand your consciousness. There is no limit to that expansion. Grow slowly but surely as nature does. Open that single inner eye within you; see all that is perfect. See My wonders and glories all around you; see Me reflected in your fellowmen. Know that all are made in My reflected in your fellowmen. Know that all are made in My image and likeness, that perfection is the real and all else illusion. Demonstrate what you feel within.

·       GO YOUR WAY DOING MY WILL - When a truth has been revealed to you from within, you understand that truth because it is a part of you. You know that you are standing on an unshakable foundation, and you can speak on it with absolute authority and confidence. Remember that you are in the world but not of it; therefore, have no longing for the things of the world which are here today and gone tomorrow. See always the things of the spirit which are eternal, from everlasting to everlasting. In quietness and confidence go your way, doing My will.

·       REMEMBER THAT I AM LIFE - Keep on raising your consciousness and see beyond the immediate; see the real, the spiritual, the perfection of My creation. It is there in everything and everyone. You will be severely tested from time to time, but as you peel off layer upon layer of disillusionment and unreality, you will find that perfect creation of Mine in its full beauty and glory. You will find your whole life beginning to change. You will find yourself living in peace and harmony, because you are creating it for yourself by your right approach to life. Remember that I am life; therefore, it is your right approach Me, the source of all, the creator of all that is perfect. You can find a perfect freedom which protects you from all that would harm you. Stand firm in your belief that I am guiding your life.

·       NO IDLE WORDS - Let there be no idle words spoken. There is power in words and that power must not be dissipated but channeled in the right direction. Watch your tongue, remember that silence is golden!

·       I WANT YOU TO KNOW - Be grateful for everything that helps you to expand your consciousness. Every step that makes you rise is a step in the right direction and should be welcomed. See these as steppingstones and dance along them joyously and surefooted with the assurance that you cannot fail to reach the goal. Do this whole-heartedly. This is an exciting life. Nothing is dull or uninteresting when done with raised consciousness. It may be the same old job you have done thousands of times but now you are doing it from a different dimension and therefore it appears to be entirely different. It takes on a new purpose for you are doing all for Me. See it like a dark room when someone walks into it and puts his hand on a switch and instantly all is light. This transformation can be just like that. There need be no twilight hour. I want you to know that this can happen and you will find it happening to you now. You feel that this is a mighty leap from one stepping-stone to the next. So it is, but you have wings on your feet and you know that all things are possible, so you can take that leap in absolute confidence and know that you will land safely. I never fail you nor forsake you, but am with you and within you to help you over every transition. See it like a dark room when someone walks into it and puts his hand on a switch and instantly all is light. This transformation can be just like that. There need be no twilight hour. Divine Messages - 72 : God Spoke To Me by Eileen Caddy - Sincerity - 1/2

An extract from the book “God Spoke To Me” by Eileen Caddy – Section “Sincerity”

·       REJOICE AND BE OF GOOD CHEER - Rejoice and be of good cheer, for the doors stand wide open. Enter and share the wonders of the new. Walk with a light tread. Dance like a piece of thistledown  through My many mansions. Enjoy to the full everything that is happening. Expect only the best, the most beautiful and glorious and behold, all things open up before you. All is there for you to behold. Miss nothing. My finger is pointing the way and those of the light behold it and walk in My ways. My ways. Go with all that is happening. Your heart is full, let it overflow. You saw a chalice of silver light  overflowing, and the pouring forth of that liquid made smooth all things which it touched. That is My love flowing forth from hearts which have been split wide open, freeing the love to flow with ever-increasing power and strength. The need is great. Never at any time stem the flow of that love; never be afraid to demonstrate it openly. What is the use of saying that you love someone if you are afraid to demonstrate that love on the outer? It becomes like empty words without power. Let go and let Me use you as I will, freely, joyously. Rejoice and behold all things become new.

·       ADVANCE WITH JOY - Open the door of your consciousness wide so that there is a firm flow of My divine inspiration in and out. As you do this, your understanding will grow and expand and the things of the spirit will develop. All I need is a receptive instrument so that My truths can be imparted. Put first things first. Find the right path, the way of the Spirit. The way of the spirit you must tread with only Me as your companion and guide. You can take no human companions with you along this path; it is straight and narrow and there is no room. Alone we tread the path of the spirit. It can be the most exciting and thrilling adventure you have ever experienced, for you are entering new realms, exploring new dimensions, and you never know what is going to happen next. Be not faint-hearted. There are ever greater and more wonderful realms to be opened up, more and more and more. Advance with joy and praise. Advance with joy and praise. Allow nothing to stop your advancing along My spiritual path.

·       RISEN BEING - As you talk about risen being, as your consciousness rises and expands in this thought, it becomes more and more a part of you. You begin to live it, to be it, and the longing in you to do this helps in many ways. It is as if you were completely blind and could see no light, in fact you did not know the meaning of light and now you have been made whole and can see for the first time. The things you see are so wonderful that you find it difficult to believe they are real, you keep stretching your consciousness to touch them. You handle them in your consciousness in wonderment and find that they are reality, that you can live and be in this risen state, not occasionally but all the time. Never pull back or doubt this thought. It is fact; the more you dwell upon it, the more real it becomes. You wonder why you have been so blind and unable to see this truth as fact until recently. My child, you were not ready. There is a right time for everything. Now is the time for the great awakening. What each soul does with this falling away of the scales before its eyes is up to each individual. Some will glory in the revelations, some will try to draw the glory to the self. Some will turn their backs in fear and disbelief and will walk straight back into their self-made darkness. This is now the dividing of the ways. You will see it happening all around you. Be surprised at nothing, for this time is a time of wonderment.

·       LET THE WORLD GO BY - Be still. Let the world go by, but seek peace and stillness, which are absolutely essential. Never be too tired to listen to My voice. Be aware of that still, small voice within you, guiding you, prompting you, giving you the right answer to every problem. This is what makes you tick! If you closed down this part of yourself, you would become like a clock that had not been wound up and had stopped ticking, or a piece of machinery that had been clogged by dirt and needed cleaning before it could work again. Think on those things, My child. Realize just how vital is that contact you have with Me. Seek peace and stillness at all times. How necessary it is to be faithful in service and to enjoy the service whatever it may be. Approach it every day with new eyes, realizing how important and essential this is. Start now doing that same routine job with an entirely new attitude. Stop and look at it from a new angle; stand back and look at it upside down if this will help you change your attitude  towards it. When a child does the washing up for the first time, it is the most thrilling thing it has ever done. The soap suds are fun, the water dripping off the cups and plates is a lovely spectacle, everything is a wonderful game and it dwells on every piece of china in sheer delight. How about every time you do the washing up? Stop and see it with the eyes of a child. Nothing in life should be dull. Try this out today as an experiment and see what a difference it can make. Do it with the right attitude and enjoy everything you do. Life is what you make it. Make it a thing of sheer beauty and harmony.

Divine Messages - 71 : Glimpses of the Divine Vision by Swami Ramdas - Love

An extract from the book “Glimpses of the Divine Vision” by Swami Ramdas – Section “Love”

·         Love begets love. Love is life, love is Truth. The highest attainment is love, the loftiest goal is love.

·         The cosmic vision held out in the Gita alone can enable you to attain universal love. This vision or love grants you never- fading joy and peace. To love God is to love all, and to love all is to love God. This is the secret of Self-realization and liberation, and Ram Nam is the way.

·         Indeed every movement of your mind in thought, every movement of your tongue in words, every movement of your limbs in activity or works, is the play of Shakti. Shakti is nothing but God’s love. When we realize that all movement is the movement of that supreme love, we live continuously in a state of divine ecstasy which is simply inexpressible. Then, Prem fills us through and through, in other words, we are soaked in Prem. The quality of Prem is Anand. There is also the witness of this play of love or Shakti - the immutable, changeless, all-pervading, static aspect of your being, whose quality is ineffable peace. On this unaffected screen of eternal peace dances in flitting forms, infinite love producing sweet intoxicating music of Anand. Every particle of your body and the whole universe is thrilling with Sri Ram’s love. So, there is nothing but Anand in all movement, change and activity. There is nothing but peace in the depths of all forms-result of movement and change. So, eternal peace and bliss are the only Reality.

·         Everybody wants to eat only sweet things. The thought of bitter things is repulsive to all. Love pure and glorious love-the immortal divine love makes us drink always sweetness and joy. Therefore, to open your hearts to the inflow of this intoxicating love and remain ever in the rapture of it is the supreme blessing and purpose of life. All things pass away-your petty ambitions and unregulated aspirations are things of the moment. Your pleasures and pains, your successes and failures, your exultations and depressions, and your desires and fancies, all, all pass away. The one thing that remains unaltered, permanent and eternal is divine Love.

·         Love does not rest content with merely loving, but flows out in acts of service. Love is blissful only when it freely gives itself away. Therefore, it is truly said-“The giver and the receiver are both blessed.”

·         Love must ever be revealed in service; otherwise, love has no value, or love is no love. Love cheerfully sacrifices; love willingly suffers. Where such love is, there is real peace and joy. Such a love illumines and blesses life.

Divine Messages - 70 : The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna by 'M'ahendranath Gupta - How to receive God's Grace?

Extracts from the book “The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna” by ‘M’ahendranath Gupta (conversations between Sri Ramakrishna, the Master, and his disciples / devotees)

How to receive God's grace
JAYGOPAL: "How does one receive the grace of God?"

MASTER: "Constantly you have to chant the name and glories of God and give up worldly thoughts as much as you can.  With the greatest effort you may try to bring water into your field for your crops, but it may all leak out through holes in the ridges.  Then all your efforts to bring the water by digging a canal will be futile.”

"You will feel restless for God when your heart becomes pure and your mind free from attachment to the things of the world.  Then alone will your prayer reach God.  A telegraph wire cannot carry messages if it has a break or some other defect.”

"I used to cry for God all alone, with a longing heart.  I used to weep, 'O God, where art Thou?' Weeping thus, I would lose all consciousness of the world.  My mind would merge in the Mahāvāyu.”

Renunciation of worldly attachment
"How can one attain yoga? By completely renouncing attachment to worldly things.  The mind must be pure and without blemish, like the telegraph wire that has no defect.”

Unselfish love of God
"One must not cherish any desire whatever.  The devotion of a man who has any desire is selfish.  But desireless devotion is love for its own sake.  You may love me or not, but I love you: this is love for its own sake.”

"The thing is that one must love God.  Through intense love one attains the vision of Him.  The attraction of the husband for the chaste wife, the attraction of the child for its mother, the attraction of worldly possessions for the worldly man-when a man can blend these three into one, and direct it all to God, then he gets the vision of God."

Purity of heart
VIJAY: "How can one see God?"

MASTER: "One cannot see God without purity of heart.  Through attachment to 'woman and gold' the mind has become stained-covered with dirt, as it were.  A magnet cannot attract a needle if the needle is covered with mud.  Wash away the mud and the magnet will draw it.  Likewise, the dirt of the mind can be washed away with the tears of our eyes.  This stain is removed if one sheds tears of repentance and says, 'O God, I shall never again do such a thing.' Thereupon God, who is like the magnet, draws to Himself the mind, which is like the needle.  Then the devotee goes into samādhi and obtains the vision of God.”

God's grace is the ultimate help
"You may try thousands of times, but nothing can be achieved without God's grace.  One cannot see God without His grace.  Is it an easy thing to receive the grace of God? One must altogether renounce egotism; one cannot see God as long as one feels, 'I am the doer.' Suppose, in a family, a man has taken charge of the store-room; then if someone asks the master, 'Sir, will you yourself kindly give me something from the store-room?', the master says to him: 'There is already someone in the store-room.  What can I do there?'

"God doesn't easily appear in the heart of a man who feels himself to be his own master.  But God can be seen the moment His grace descends.  He is the Sun of Knowledge.  One single ray of His has illumined the world with the light of knowledge.  That is how we are able to see one another and acquire varied knowledge.  One can see God only if He turns His light toward His own face.”

"The police sergeant goes his rounds in the dark of night with a lantern in his hand.  No one sees his face; but with the help of that light the sergeant sees everybody's face, and others, too, can see one another.  If you want to see the sergeant, however, you must pray to him: 'Sir, please turn the light on your own face.  Let me see you.' In the same way one must pray to God: 'O Lord, be gracious and turn the light of knowledge on Thyself, that I may see Thy face.'

Divine Messages - 69 : The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna by 'M'ahendranath Gupta - Seven Planes of the Mind and "I"

Extracts from the book “The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna” by ‘M’ahendranath Gupta (conversations between Sri Ramakrishna, the Master, and his disciples / devotees)

Seven planes of the mind
"It is said in the Vedas that a man experiences samādhi when his mind ascends to the seventh plane.  The ego can disappear only when one goes into samādhi.  Where does the mind of a man ordinarily dwell? In the first three planes.  These are at the organs of evacuation and generation, and at the navel.  Then the mind is immersed only in worldliness, attached to 'woman (man for woman, to be read as lust) and gold (to be read as greed)'.  A man sees the light of God when his mind dwells in the plane of the heart.  He sees the light and exclaims: 'Ah! What is this? What is this?' The next plane is at the throat.  When the mind dwells there he likes to hear and talk only of God.  When the mind ascends to the next plane, in the forehead, between the eyebrows, he sees the form of Satchidānanda and desires to touch and embrace It.  But he is unable to do so.  It is like the light in a lantern, which you can see but cannot touch.  You feel as if you were touching the light, but in reality you are not.  When the mind reaches the seventh plane, then the ego vanishes completely and the man goes into samādhi."

Indescribability of highest plane
VIJAY: "What does a man see when he attains the Knowledge of Brahman after reaching the seventh plane?"

MASTER: "What happens when the mind reaches the seventh plane cannot be described.”
"Once a boat enters the 'black waters' of the ocean, it does not return.  Nobody knows what happens to the boat after that.  Therefore the boat cannot give us any information about the ocean.”

"Once a salt doll went to measure the depth of the ocean.  No sooner did it enter the water than it melted.  Now who could tell how deep the ocean was? That which could have told about its depth had melted.  Reaching the seventh plane, the mind is annihilated; man goes into samādhi.  What he feels then cannot be described in words.”

The "wicked I"
"The 'I' that makes one a worldly person and attaches one to 'woman and gold' is the 'wicked I'.  The intervention of this ego creates the difference between jiva and Ātman.  Water appears to be divided into two parts if one puts a stick across it.  But in reality there is only one water.  It appears as two on account of the stick.  This 'I' is the stick.  Remove the stick and there remains only one water as before.”

"Now, what is this 'wicked I'? It is the ego that says: 'What? Don't they know me? I have so much money! Who is wealthier than I?' If a thief robs such a man of only ten rupees, first of all he wrings the money out of the thief, then he gives him a good beating.  But the matter doesn't end there: the thief is handed over to the police and is eventually sent to jail.  The 'wicked I' says: 'What? Doesn't the rogue know whom he has robbed? To steal my ten rupees! How dare he?' "

VIJAY: "If without destroying the 'I' a man cannot get rid of attachment to the world and consequently cannot experience samādhi, then it would be wise for him to follow the path of Brahmajnāna to attain samādhi.  If the 'I' persists in the path of devotion, then one should rather choose the path of knowledge."

The "servant I"
MASTER: "It is true that one or two can get rid of the 'I' through samādhi; but these cases are very rare.  You may indulge in thousands of reasonings, but still the 'I' comes back.  You may cut the peepal-tree to the very root today, but you will notice a sprout springing up tomorrow.  Therefore if the 'I' must remain, let the rascal remain as the 'servant I'.  As long as you live, you should say, 'O God, Thou art the Master and I am Thy servant.' The 'I' that feels, 'I am the servant of God, I am His devotee' does not injure one.  Sweet things cause acidity of the stomach, no doubt, but sugar candy is an exception.”

"The path of knowledge is very difficult.  One cannot obtain Knowledge unless one gets rid of the feeling that one is the body.  In the Kaliyuga the life of man is centred on food.  He cannot get rid of the feeling that he is the body and the ego.  Therefore the path of devotion is prescribed for this cycle. This is an easy path.  You will attain God if you sing His name and glories and pray to Him with a longing heart.  There is not the least doubt about it.”

"Suppose you draw a line on the surface of water with a bamboo stick.  The water appears to be divided into two parts; but the line doesn't remain for any length of time.  The 'servant I' or the 'devotee I' or the 'child I' is only a line drawn with the ego and is not real".

The "ego of a devotee"
VIJAY (to the Master): "Sir, you ask us to renounce the 'wicked I'.  Is there any harm in the 'servant I'?"

MASTER: "The 'servant I'-that is, the feeling, 'I am the servant of God, I am the devotee of God'-does not injure one.  On the contrary, it helps one to realize God."

VIJAY: "Well, sir, what becomes of the lust, anger, and other passions of one who keeps the 'servant I'?"

MASTER: "If a man truly feels like that, then he has only the semblance of lust, anger, and the like.  If, after attaining God, he looks on himself as the servant or the devotee of God, then he cannot injure anyone.  By touching the philosopher's stone a sword is turned into gold.  It keeps the appearance of a sword but cannot injure.”

"When the dry branch of a coconut palm drops to the ground, it leaves only a mark on the trunk indicating that once there was a branch at that place.  In like manner, he who has attained God keeps only an appearance of ego; there remains in him only a semblance of anger and lust.  He becomes like a child.  A child has no attachment to the three gunas-sattva, rajas, and tamas.  He becomes as quickly detached from a thing as he becomes attached to it.  You can cajole him out of a cloth worth five rupees with a doll worth an ānnā, though at first he may say with great determination: 'No, I won't give it to you.  My daddy bought it for me.' Again, all persons are the same to a child.  He has no feeling of high and low in regard to persons.  So he doesn't discriminate about caste.  If his mother tells him that a particular man should be regarded as an elder brother, the child will eat from the same plate with him, though the man may belong to the low caste of a blacksmith.  The child doesn't know hate, or what is holy or unholy.”

"Even after attaining samādhi, some retain the 'servant ego' or the 'devotee ego'.  The bhakta keeps this 'I-consciousness'.  He says, 'O God, Thou art the Master and I am Thy servant; Thou art the Lord and I am Thy devotee.' He feels that way even after the realization of God.  His 'I' is not completely effaced.  Again, by constantly practising this kind of 'I-consciousness', one ultimately attains God.  This is called bhaktiyoga.”

"One can attain the Knowledge of Brahman, too, by following the path of bhakti.  God is all-powerful.  He may give His devotee Brahmajnāna also, if He so wills.  But the devotee generally doesn't seek the Knowledge of the Absolute.  He would rather have the consciousness that God is the Master and he the servant, or that God is the Divine Mother and he the child."

Divine Messages - 68 : Glimpses of the Divine Vision by Swami Ramdas - Faith

An extract from the book “Glimpses of the Divine Vision” by Swami Ramdas – Section “Faith”

·         “Faith in God means faith in your own higher Self who is your real being. The main qualities of this faith are absolute fearlessness, and freedom from worry and anxiety of every kind, through a complete surrender in all things to the Almighty will of this supreme Self. To attain to this surrender you have to keep your mind dwelling constantly in God, not permitting it to come down to harassing thoughts about your body and other matters. This highest Truth that resides in you is all compassionate and merciful. What you have to do is to trust this great Truth and give up all cares. ‘Faith can move mountains’ is a trite saying.

·         Keep to a life of strict discipline by adjusting your food and rest according to a set system. Above all, maintain strictly a life of Brahmacharya. Merely praying to God without the corresponding effort on your part cannot avail you anything. Life is granted for the achievement of a great ideal which is freedom and cheerfulness in selfless service and sacrifice. The mere dedication of life to this exalted purpose will liberate it from all distempers.

·         When you have once taken complete refuge in God, you ought to give up all doubts and worries. You have to consider that, whatever way He decides the course of events in your life, it is always for good. Worldly honour and disgrace have no bearing on His decisions. You must freely and unreservedly put yourself in His hands. He can never come to your rescue if you do not cease from worrying and restlessness. Self-surrender means a state of perfect peace and calmness, attained through complete submission to the Divine Will.

·         Fears and anxieties cannot affect you in all your undertakings, provided you are sure and firm in your faith. God is the great provider and he who trusts Him is never lost. Only you have to tune your will with His will, mingle your consciousness with His divine light and wisdom, merge your life in His eternal existence; then you are perfectly safe in all situations of life.

·         The divine power manifest and working in great Mahatmas is capable of performing wondrous miracles. By faith alone you could attain high and ambitious ideals. If you are earnestly after spiritual illumination, you must strenuously work for it by concentrating all your thoughts on the supreme goal of life, the immortal Reality that dwells within you. Merely running after Gurus, without faith and a sincere aspiration for being benefited by their contact, will be of no use.

·         Hold to the idea, “I am not the mind, I see that I am thinking, I am watching my mind act,” and each day the identification of yourself with thoughts and feelings will grow less, until at last you can entirely separate yourself from the mind and actually know it to be apart from yourself. – Swami Vivekananda
